First is spatial clarity: a room should be immediately intuitive to navigate. Second is proportion and scale: aligning ceiling clearances and door frame frames to create balanced spatial volumes. Third is material truth: allowing timber, concrete, and metal to remain raw and celebrate their natural states.
The Power of Restraint
The remaining three principles are intentional lighting, spatial flow, and edited styling restraint. Restraint is perhaps the most difficult—knowing when to stop editing. Leaving empty space on a wall or floor is not a missed opportunity; it is an active design choice that gives elements breathing room.
